Doctor Strange Movies: Every MCU Appearance in Order

There are some Marvel characters who can walk into a film for five minutes and somehow make the whole thing feel bigger. Doctor Strange is one of them. Whether he is casually opening a portal, arguing with Tony Stark or making a decision that could ruin several universes, Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange has become one of the MCU's most interesting characters. And yes, the cape still deserves its own credit in the cast list.

If you have searched for Doctor Strange movies, the answer is slightly more complicated than two solo films. Strange has appeared in six released MCU films, from his 2016 origin story to the multiverse chaos of 2022. Here is the full list, where he fits into each story, and what we actually know about a possible third standalone movie after Avengers: Secret Wars.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017) – The Brilliant Little Cameo

Strange turns up briefly when Thor and Loki arrive in New York looking for Odin. It is a small scene, but it tells us a lot about his new role. He knows who is entering Earth, he is keeping an eye on magical trouble, and he has absolutely no patience for Loki. Watching him casually send Thor around the Sanctum while topping up a beer is a lovely reminder that this character can be funny without becoming the joke.

You do not need Ragnarok to understand Strange's solo films, but if you want every on-screen MCU appearance, it belongs on the list.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) – Strange Sees the Bigger Picture

This is the film that made Doctor Strange feel essential to the wider MCU. His uneasy partnership with Tony Stark is fantastic, and the battle on Titan lets him use his powers in ways the first solo film could only hint at. But the moment everybody remembers is his glimpse of 14,000,605 possible futures, with only one path to victory.

When he hands over the Time Stone, it looks like an extraordinary gamble. Knowing what comes next makes it one of the most important choices in the Infinity Saga, and it gives Strange a fascinating burden: he has seen an outcome that everybody else has to live through without knowing the plan.

Avengers: Endgame (2019) – One Finger, One Chance

Strange is absent for much of Endgame because he was among those erased by Thanos. When the portals open for the final battle, though, he returns with the other heroes for one of the MCU's great cinema moments. The payoff is not another giant spell. It is a single raised finger, telling Tony Stark that this is the one chance they have.

He is not the lead here, but his presence ties the ending back to the impossible calculation he made in Infinity War. Sometimes the most powerful thing a sorcerer can do is know when not to interfere.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) – The Spell That Goes Wrong

Peter Parker asks Strange to help the world forget that he is Spider-Man. It sounds straightforward, at least by the standards of a man who regularly folds buildings in half, but the spell goes wrong and villains from other Spider-Man universes begin arriving. Strange becomes both an ally and an obstacle, because Peter wants to save people Strange believes are too dangerous to keep around.

No Way Home matters enormously if you are following the multiverse side of Strange's story. It shows how even a supposedly controlled use of magic can have consequences that reach well beyond one city or one universe.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) – Where We Left Him

The second solo film ends with Strange confronting the consequences of using forbidden magic and learning that the multiverse is not something he can simply tidy up after making a mess. The third eye is a wonderfully unsettling final image, and the mid-credits scene introduces Clea, played by Charlize Theron, who arrives with a warning about an incursion.

That word matters. Incursions involve universes colliding, and the idea sits right at the heart of Marvel's multiverse storytelling. The film leaves Strange heading into the Dark Dimension with Clea, which feels like the obvious thread for another solo adventure to pick up.

What About Doctor Strange in What If...?

If you are counting everything rather than just movies, Doctor Strange also appears in Marvel's animated What If...? series. Its Doctor Strange Supreme storyline is particularly worth watching. This version of Strange loses Christine Palmer and becomes so obsessed with changing that loss that his grief threatens an entire reality.

It is not another standalone movie, and it should not be mixed into the six-film count. But as a character study it is one of the more memorable things Marvel has done with Strange, precisely because it shows how easily his determination can become something much darker.

Will Doctor Strange Appear in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars?

This is where we need to separate what has been said from what has actually appeared on screen. In a January 2025 interview with Variety, Benedict Cumberbatch said Strange would sit out Avengers: Doomsday because the character did not fit that part of the story. In the same interview he said Strange would feature heavily in Avengers: Secret Wars. Those were his comments at the time, not a guarantee that Marvel could never change its plans.

Secret Wars is especially interesting for Strange fans because the 2015 comic-book storyline gives Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom a major connection. That does not mean the films will follow the comics beat for beat, but the possibilities are enormous. After all, if reality itself is coming apart, calling the bloke who deals with broken realities seems fairly sensible.

Doctor Strange 3 After Secret Wars: Rumours, Clea and the Incursions

A third Doctor Strange standalone movie has been talked about for years, but as of November 2026 Marvel has not publicly confirmed an official title, director, plot or release date. In that January 2025 Variety interview, Cumberbatch said Marvel was open to discussing where the character goes next, including the creative team and which parts of the comics to explore. That is encouraging, but it is not the same thing as a formal film announcement.

One rumoured or fan-suggested direction is a story about incursions, the Dark Dimension and Clea, picking up the loose ends from Multiverse of Madness. You may see names such as Doctor Strange 3 or Doctor Strange: In the Incursions of Insanity floating around online, but neither should be treated as an officially announced Marvel Studios title. We would love to see the third film go deeper into the magical side of the MCU rather than simply turn into another crossover in disguise.

The really exciting possibility is what a post-Secret Wars Marvel universe might look like. If the multiverse is reshaped, where does that leave Strange? Is he still protecting the same reality? What happens to his relationship with Clea, Wong and the other sorcerers? And has he finally learned that trying to control absolutely everything is a terrible idea? Probably not, which is why he is so entertaining.

The Best Order to Watch Every Doctor Strange Movie

For a first watch, release order is the easiest and most satisfying route: Doctor Strange (2016), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). This lets you see his personality and powers develop alongside the MCU rather than jumping between timelines.

If you only want the solo films, the answer is much simpler: watch Doctor Strange and then Multiverse of Madness. But you will appreciate the second film far more if you have seen Infinity War, Endgame and No Way Home, because by then Strange has already made some very big decisions about other people's lives.

Why Doctor Strange Deserves Another Standalone Film

I think Doctor Strange works best when Marvel remembers he is not just a useful portal generator for whichever Avenger needs to get somewhere quickly. His first film was about an arrogant man having to accept that there are things he cannot fix with talent, money or sheer stubbornness. His second asked whether he had really learned that lesson. There is still plenty of room to explore the answer.

Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant at making Strange both irritating and strangely likeable. He can deliver a cutting one-liner, look genuinely frightened by what he has unleashed and still convince you that he thinks he is the only adult in the room. Give that character a proper magical mystery, a little horror and some real consequences, and I would happily buy a ticket tomorrow.

And please, Marvel, keep the Cloak of Levitation. It has better comic timing than half the people in the MCU.

Two solo movies and six released live-action MCU film appearances might not sound like a huge filmography compared with some Avengers, but Doctor Strange has been at the centre of several of Marvel's biggest turning points. From the Time Stone to the multiverse, he has a habit of being nearby whenever reality starts falling apart.

Whether a third solo film arrives after Secret Wars remains to be seen. For now, there are six released movies to revisit, one excellent animated detour, and a whole lot of unanswered questions waiting on the other side of that portal.
