Overview

Howard the Duck (1986) Storyline

Howard the Duck follows Howard, a wisecracking duck from another planet who is accidentally pulled to Earth and crash-lands in Cleveland. Stranded in a world far stranger than his own, he teams up with aspiring rock singer Beverly and scientist Phil to stop an evil cosmic force from destroying the planet. Based on the Marvel comic character, it became one of the most infamous comic-book adaptations ever made. Behind the camera, Willard Huyck gives the adaptation its shape, helping define whether it leans more into spectacle, character drama, genre thrills or straight-up comic-book chaos. We have rated this 7 out of 10, which makes it a worthwhile entry to revisit when comparing how well comic properties translate across different studios, eras and audience expectations. For SEO and fan discovery, it belongs here because it adds context to the bigger comic movie timeline: not every adaptation has to be perfect, but each one says something about the genre, the audience it was chasing and the kind of stories studios believed could work on screen.

Howard the Duck (1986) Review 7/10

We have rated this 7 out of 10. Howard the Duck has spent decades being the punchline of comic-book movie history, and honestly… it kind of deserves it. It is bizarre, messy, tonally confused and looks like someone dared a studio executive to make it. That said, there is a strange charm to how unapologetically weird it is. Lea Thompson commits fully, Jeffrey Jones goes full chaos mode, and the practical effects are unforgettable for all the right and wrong reasons. A disaster? Yes. A fascinating one? Absolutely.
