Edge of Tomorrow is the 2014 sci-fi action film based on the Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, which also received a manga adaptation. The story follows military officer William Cage, who is thrown into a brutal war against alien invaders known as Mimics. After dying in combat, Cage becomes trapped in a time loop that forces him to relive the same battle repeatedly. Teaming with legendary soldier Rita Vrataski, Cage slowly learns how to survive, fight and potentially save humanity. Directed by Doug Liman, the film combines explosive action, dark humour and clever sci-fi concepts into one of the most entertaining genre films of the 2010s.
We have rated Edge of Tomorrow 9 out of 10, because it takes a brilliant sci-fi concept and executes it with incredible energy, humour and pacing. Tom Cruise is excellent as Cage, starting as a cowardly outsider before evolving into a hardened fighter through countless repeated deaths. Emily Blunt completely steals scenes as the iconic Rita Vrataski, becoming one of modern sci-fi cinema’s coolest action heroes. The time-loop mechanic never becomes repetitive because the film constantly evolves the story and reveals new information. For manga and graphic novel adaptation fans, Edge of Tomorrow proves how effectively Japanese sci-fi concepts can translate into blockbuster cinema.
