How do you feel about Ghost in the Shell (2017)?
Ghost in the Shell is the 2017 live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s legendary cyberpunk manga and anime franchise. The film follows Major Mira Killian, a cyber-enhanced operative working for Section 9, an elite unit that investigates cyber terrorism and advanced technological crime. As she hunts a dangerous hacker known as Kuze, the Major begins uncovering hidden truths about her own identity and the corporation that created her. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the film recreates several iconic visual moments from the anime while exploring themes of memory, identity and artificial humanity in a futuristic cyberpunk world.
We have rated Ghost in the Shell 7 out of 10, because while it struggled with the impossible pressure of adapting such an influential manga and anime property, it still delivers stunning cyberpunk visuals and an interesting atmosphere. Scarlett Johansson gives the Major a cold, detached presence that fits the story’s themes about identity and humanity. The neon-lit cityscapes, holograms and futuristic technology look fantastic on screen, even if the story never quite reaches the philosophical depth of the original source material. For cyberpunk fans and manga adaptation enthusiasts, it remains visually fascinating even with its flaws.
