Marvel Television has released the first official VisionQuest trailer, finally giving audiences a proper look at Paul Bettany’s return as Vision — and the unusual new form being adopted by James Spader’s Ultron.
Unveiled during Disney’s D23 entertainment presentation in Anaheim, the trailer brings together several strands of Marvel Cinematic Universe history. It continues the story of White Vision after his disappearance at the end of WandaVision, revisits Ultron more than a decade after Avengers: Age of Ultron, and reconnects with the search for Tommy Maximoff established by Agatha All Along.
The result looks considerably stranger and more introspective than a conventional superhero series. Vision is not simply facing another mechanical enemy. He appears to be exploring his own memories, identity and capacity for emotion within a world populated by human representations of artificial intelligences.
James Spader steps out as a human Ultron
The trailer’s biggest talking point is undoubtedly Spader appearing physically as Ultron’s human avatar. Marvel is not completely abandoning the villain’s familiar robotic appearance, but allowing Spader himself to embody the character gives their reunion a more personal and unsettling quality.
Ultron was originally performed through voice and motion capture by Spader in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Although Vision seemingly destroyed the final Ultron body at the end of that film, the confrontation happened away from the audience’s view. Marvel has not yet fully explained whether the returning Ultron is an independently surviving programme, a fragment embedded within Vision or a manifestation created by Vision’s troubled mind.
The new footage wisely preserves that uncertainty. What is clear is that Ultron will have a significant role in Vision’s attempt to understand himself. As Vision’s would-be creator, Ultron occupies something resembling the position of an abusive father — making his involvement in a story about identity, inheritance and family particularly uncomfortable.
Having Spader play this version in recognisably human form is a clever creative choice. His relaxed delivery and quietly intimidating presence remain instantly suited to Ultron, but seeing those characteristics without a metal face between the actor and audience makes the character feel different. It is familiar enough to evoke Age of Ultron, while still suggesting that VisionQuest has more ambitious ideas than simply resurrecting an old villain.
Vision confronts memories he never truly lived
White Vision regained the original Vision’s memories during the WandaVision finale, but memories are not necessarily the same as lived emotional experience. The trailer appears to build its central mystery around that distinction.
Bettany is shown in both Vision’s synthetic form and a human presentation as he moves through environments connected to his past. The footage also personifies several artificial intelligences associated with Tony Stark, including J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y. and E.D.I.T.H. Stark’s robotic assistants DUM-E and U are represented as part of the gathering too, creating what resembles a strange extended family of discarded or transformed technology.
James D’Arcy’s presence is an especially satisfying piece of casting. D’Arcy previously played Edwin Jarvis in Agent Carter and Avengers: Endgame; here, he represents J.A.R.V.I.S., the programme whose consciousness helped form Vision. The wider confirmed cast includes Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, Orla Brady, Emily Hampshire, Ruaridh Mollica and James D’Arcy, alongside Bettany and Spader.
For all the digital architecture and Marvel mythology, Vision’s struggle remains remarkably relatable. He has access to memories of love, grief and parenthood, yet must decide whether those memories genuinely belong to him. The character has always challenged the assumption that emotions must be biological to be meaningful. This trailer suggests the series will continue exploring whether an artificial being can love and feel in its own distinct — but no less valid — way.
Tommy Maximoff brings the family story full circle
Ruaridh Mollica appears as an older Tommy Maximoff, one of the twin sons created by Wanda within the Westview Hex. Agatha All Along established that Billy Maximoff had survived through William Kaplan and ended with Billy beginning a search for his brother.
Exactly how Tommy’s story intersects with Vision has not been revealed, and the trailer avoids providing a complete answer. Nevertheless, his inclusion strengthens the theme of fathers and sons running through the footage: Ultron considers himself Vision’s creator, while Vision must confront what it means to have been Tommy’s father.
Marvel has officially described VisionQuest as the concluding instalment in the television trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024. Terry Matalas, best known for his work on Star Trek: Picard, serves as showrunner.
CMDB’s verdict on the VisionQuest trailer
The first trailer has significantly raised our expectations. Its combination of surreal science fiction, family drama and MCU history feels like a natural extension of WandaVision without simply repeating that show’s sitcom structure.
Spader’s human Ultron is the standout idea. It could easily have felt like a cost-saving shortcut, but the trailer presents it as an intentional part of Vision’s psychological landscape. Allowing Spader’s face and performance to take centre stage may make Ultron more intimate, charismatic and dangerous than ever.
Of course, a strong trailer is not a guarantee that the complete series will deliver on all of these ideas. For now, however, VisionQuest looks prepared to treat Vision as more than a super-powered machine. It is asking what makes his life, love and grief real — and that is exactly where the character is at his most compelling.
