The Mandalorian and Grogu Sets September Disney+ Release After Soft Box Office Run

Published August 15, 2026 Written by Will Holt 20 views

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is officially heading to Disney+, giving Din Djarin and his young apprentice a chance to find a bigger audience in the place where their adventure began.

Lucasfilm has confirmed that Jon Favreau’s Star Wars film will begin streaming on 2 September 2026. Its Disney+ arrival comes just over three months after the film opened exclusively in cinemas on 22 May.

The release will not require an additional digital purchase for Disney+ subscribers. The film has already been available to buy through digital retailers since 21 July, while its 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions are scheduled for 25 August in the United States.

The Mandalorian and Grogu returns to its natural home

The move brings the characters full circle. The Mandalorian helped establish Disney+ as a major destination for original franchise television when its first season premiered in 2019, while Grogu quickly became one of the most recognisable new Star Wars characters in years.

After three seasons of streaming adventures, Lucasfilm moved Din and Grogu to the big screen for their next mission. The resulting film was directed by Favreau and continued their story with Pedro Pascal returning as Din Djarin. Sigourney Weaver joined the cast as Colonel Ward, while Jeremy Allen White voiced Rotta the Hutt.

The Disney+ launch also falls on the same date as LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, a new animated special revisiting characters and stories from all three seasons of the original series. That gives fans the opportunity to turn 2 September into a sizeable Mandalorian double bill.

Was The Mandalorian and Grogu a box office disappointment?

Calling the film an outright box office failure would overlook some important context. The Mandalorian and Grogu opened at number one in North America and earned approximately $81.7 million across its first three days. Its four-day Memorial Day total reached roughly $98.1 million, while audience polling reported by the Associated Press produced a respectable A- CinemaScore.

Nevertheless, the final result was undeniably soft for a modern live-action Star Wars film. Current figures place its worldwide total at approximately $345 million, including around $177.6 million domestically and $167.3 million from international markets.

The film was reported to have cost about $165 million before marketing. That lower production figure makes comparisons with the notoriously expensive Solo: A Star Wars Story less straightforward, but the new film still finished below the kind of global total traditionally associated with a major Star Wars cinema release.

Its performance may also demonstrate the difficulty of converting a streaming audience into cinema ticket sales. Viewers accustomed to following Din and Grogu at home may simply have preferred to wait for the film’s inevitable Disney+ release, particularly when the story was promoted as a continuation of an existing streaming series.

Could Disney+ give the film a second life?

This is where things could become interesting. The film’s theatrical numbers tell Disney and Lucasfilm how many people were prepared to pay for a cinema ticket, but its streaming performance will offer another measure of the characters’ popularity.

There remains a committed audience for these two characters, especially among viewers who have followed their relationship since the opening episode of The Mandalorian. Plenty of fans enjoyed the film despite its lower-than-expected cinema engagement, and Disney+ removes the additional cost and effort involved in seeing it theatrically.

That does not mean strong streaming figures will automatically produce The Mandalorian Season 4 or a movie sequel. Lucasfilm has not announced either project, and no continuation should be treated as confirmed. However, a substantial Disney+ audience would at least provide evidence that interest in Din and Grogu remains healthy, even if their drawing power was more limited at the box office.

From our perspective, it would be encouraging to see the film gain renewed traction at home. The relationship between the battle-worn Mandalorian and his Force-sensitive apprentice remains one of the most endearing parts of contemporary Star Wars, and their previous adventures were built for the weekly, small-screen experience.

When can you watch The Mandalorian and Grogu on Disney+?

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu begins streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday, 2 September 2026. All three seasons of The Mandalorian are already available on the service for anyone planning a complete rewatch beforehand.

Whether the Disney+ launch leads to another season, a sequel or a different continuation remains unknown. For now, it gives audiences who skipped the cinema run their first subscription-streaming opportunity to reunite with Mando and Grogu.
