Sonic the Hedgehog 2 picks up with Sonic settling into life on Earth, trying to become a full-fledged hero while still figuring out what that truly means. When the villainous Dr. Robotnik escapes exile on the mushroom planet, he returns to Earth with a powerful new ally — Knuckles the Echidna — in search of the all-powerful Master Emerald.
Sonic teams up with his newest friend, the brilliant and loyal Tails, who travels to Earth to warn him of the looming danger. Together, Sonic and Tails embark on a globe-trotting adventure to find the Emerald before Robotnik and Knuckles can harness its reality-altering power.
The movie explores themes of friendship, responsibility, and destiny, culminating in an epic showdown that challenges Sonic’s strength and heart. As alliances shift and secrets are revealed, Sonic steps into a new chapter as a true hero — now with Tails and Knuckles by his side.
We rated Sonic the Hedgehog 2 a solid 7/10 — an action-packed sequel that gives fans more of what they love, while introducing two of the most iconic characters from the franchise: Tails and Knuckles.
The film expands the Sonic universe in exciting ways, leaning more heavily into the game lore with the introduction of the Chaos Emeralds, the Master Emerald, and a deeper backstory for Sonic and Knuckles’ ancient connection. Tails is adorable, clever, and voiced by long-time game actress Colleen O’Shaughnessey, adding authenticity. Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba, is a powerful, no-nonsense warrior with a dry sense of humor that balances perfectly with Sonic’s playful attitude.
Jim Carrey returns as Robotnik with even more manic energy, embracing his transformation into the more exaggerated, game-accurate version of the character.
While some of the human-side plots felt a bit unnecessary, the heart of the movie is in the growing friendship between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. The finale delivers on the action and emotion, especially with Sonic’s epic transformation into Super Sonic.
It’s a fun, fast-paced family adventure and a satisfying evolution of the franchise.
