Supergirl

We were really excited to see where James Gunn’s new DC Universe would take Supergirl, and this definitely wasn’t the adventure we expected. Instead, the movie leans heavily into emotion, following a young Kara who doesn’t really know what her future looks like and is simply living each day as it comes.

As her backstory unfolds and we discover more about how she ended up alone on Earth, you begin to understand why this Supergirl is so different from Superman. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, with plenty of humour and action along the way, but at its heart there’s a surprisingly relatable message about how far we’d go for the pets we love. Krypto gives the story a huge amount of heart, while Milly Alcock does a brilliant job of showing both the vulnerable and completely unhinged sides of Kara.

We loved the movie and the cast, but something stopped us from rating it even higher. We wanted to see a little more of Supergirl herself. For much of the movie, Kara feels more like a lost, rebellious teenager with incredible powers than the superhero we know she’s capable of becoming. That may well be the point — this is her journey towards becoming that person — but it left us feeling like one piece of the puzzle was still missing.

Maybe that’s exactly what a second movie will give us. If this was about understanding Kara Zor-El, we’d love to see the next chapter show us what happens when she finally discovers exactly who Supergirl is meant to be.
