DC Comics Extended Universe

DC originally stood for Detective Comics, named after the comic series Detective Comics where Batman first appeared. Over time the company became widely known simply as DC Comics.

DC Comics is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery through its subsidiary DC Entertainment. This partnership allows DC characters to appear across films, television series, animated projects and games.

DC Comics was founded by Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1934. Many of its most famous characters were later created by legendary comic creators including Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, Bob Kane and Bill Finger.

One of the earliest and most influential DC superheroes was Superman, who first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. The success of Superman helped launch the superhero genre in comic books.

Some of the most popular DC characters include Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern and the Joker. Many of these heroes and villains have appeared in movies, TV series and animated adaptations.

The DC Universe is the shared fictional universe where most DC characters exist. Heroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman often work together in teams such as the Justice League while protecting the world from powerful villains.

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) was a shared film universe that began with Man of Steel in 2013 and included movies such as Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Justice League. The series featured interconnected stories featuring many major DC characters.

The DC Universe (DCU) is a new shared film and television universe being developed by DC Studios under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. It aims to connect movies, TV shows and animation into one unified storyline.

The Justice League is DC’s most famous superhero team. The group typically includes characters such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and Green Lantern working together to protect Earth from global and cosmic threats.

One of the earliest major DC superhero films was Superman: The Movie released in 1978, starring Christopher Reeve. The film was hugely influential and helped establish the modern superhero movie genre.

Like Marvel films, DC movies are inspired by comic storylines but often adapt them differently for the screen. Characters and events may be changed or reimagined while still drawing inspiration from decades of DC Comics history.
