The Dark Knight broke the ceiling for what superhero films were allowed to be. Heath Ledger’s Joker is legendary for good reason, but the film works because every character is pushed into impossible moral choices. It feels like a crime epic first and a comic-book movie second. Smart, intense and endlessly rewatchable, it remains the benchmark many superhero films still chase.
