We rate Angel 9/10 on Comic Movie DB. As part of the Buffy catalogue, this is the kind of entry that becomes more interesting when viewed alongside the productions around it rather than in isolation. The core cast — David Boreanaz, Charisma Carpenter, Alexis Denisof, J. August Richards, Amy Acker, Andy Hallett, James Marsters — gives the story its personality, while Joss Whedon, David Greenwalt helps establish the tone and pace. What works particularly well is the way the production uses the familiar foundations of Buffy without relying entirely on recognition. The best franchise entries still need characters worth following, a story with its own momentum and at least a few ideas or images that belong specifically to this instalment. Across a long-running property there will always be changes in style, effects, humour and storytelling, and that is part of the appeal of working through everything in order. Some entries become landmarks, others are fascinating experiments, and even the less essential chapters can add context to characters or mythology that later stories build upon. Angel earns its place in the CMDB archive because it contributes a recognisable chapter to that larger story. Our score reflects how well it works as entertainment in its own right while also acknowledging its place within the wider Buffy screen universe.
