Lucifer is the television series based on the DC/Vertigo comic character originally created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for The Sandman universe. The series follows Lucifer Morningstar, the literal Devil, who abandons Hell and opens a luxury nightclub in Los Angeles. Bored with immortality, Lucifer becomes involved in solving crimes alongside LAPD detective Chloe Decker while navigating celestial politics, family conflicts and questions about redemption. Although lighter and more procedural than the original comic series, the show became hugely popular thanks to its mix of supernatural drama, humour and Tom Ellis’ charismatic performance.
We have rated Lucifer 8 out of 10, because it successfully transformed a dark Vertigo comic character into a highly entertaining supernatural crime series without losing the charm of the concept. Tom Ellis completely owns the role, balancing humour, arrogance, vulnerability and devilish charisma in a way that made Lucifer one of television’s most likeable anti-heroes. The procedural crime format should not work as well as it does, but the chemistry between the cast keeps the series engaging. Over time, the show grew more emotional and ambitious with its mythology, rewarding fans who stuck with it across multiple seasons.
