Virus follows the crew of a tugboat who discover an abandoned Russian research vessel drifting in the ocean after a deadly storm. Once aboard, they realise an alien intelligence has infected the ship’s systems and is using machines to rebuild itself with horrifying biomechanical creations. Based on the Dark Horse comic by Chuck Pfarrer, it became a cult sci-fi horror curiosity.
Virus is exactly the kind of late-90s sci-fi horror film people forget exists until someone mentions it and suddenly everyone remembers the nightmare robot monsters. Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Sutherland bring real weight to the madness, while the practical creature work still impresses. It is messy and loud, but the biomechanical horror concept is genuinely creepy. Strange, underrated and perfect midnight-movie material.
