Overview

R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned Storyline

Set in the American West of 1876, R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned follows Sheriff Roy Pulsipher, who is gunned down in a standoff only to awaken in the afterlife — recruited by the Rest In Peace Department. This supernatural agency sends him back to Earth to hunt down escaped souls, or “Deados,” that threaten to upset the balance between the living and the dead.

As Roy adjusts to his bizarre second life, he discovers that a powerful evil is rising beneath a mining town. With the help of his reluctant partner Jeanne, he must uncover a hellish conspiracy involving demonic forces, undead outlaws, and a gateway to the underworld — all while coming to terms with his own past and unfinished business.

This prequel gives viewers a glimpse into the early days of the R.I.P.D. and its Wild West origins, blending supernatural action with western tropes.

R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned Review 5/10

5

We rated R.I.P.D. 2 a 5/10 — while not without moments of charm and decent world-building, the film ultimately falls short of being truly memorable. Jeffrey Donovan gives a solid performance as a younger Roy Pulsipher, but the movie is let down by its modest budget, predictable plot, and flat visual effects.

The western setting is a refreshing angle, and there are flashes of creativity in the lore surrounding the undead and the R.I.P.D. agency. However, the pacing drags in parts, and the humor often feels forced rather than fun. It doesn’t quite live up to the quirky potential of its predecessor, but fans of supernatural westerns or the original R.I.P.D. may still find some enjoyment.

Did You Know?

  • Jeffrey Donovan plays the younger version of Roy Pulsipher, originally portrayed by Jeff Bridges in R.I.P.D. (2013).
  • The film is a prequel, set over a century before the events of the original.
  • Despite being a direct-to-video release, it was made to expand the lore of the R.I.P.D. universe and explore different time periods.
  • Shot primarily in Hungary, the film recreated an Old West town with a limited budget and practical sets.
  • Penelope Mitchell plays Jeanne, Roy’s French-speaking R.I.P.D. partner — a nod to the international reach of the afterlife agency.
  • The R.I.P.D. graphic novels published by Dark Horse Comics provided loose inspiration for both the original and this prequel.
