The Predator Storyline

Directed by Shane Black, The Predator (2018) marks the fourth main entry in the legendary Predator franchise — and a bold (if divisive) attempt to mix brutal sci-fi horror with sharp humour.

The story kicks off when a Predator ship crash-lands on Earth, interrupting a covert military operation. Quinn McKenna (played by Boyd Holbrook), an Army sniper, encounters the alien creature and barely survives the attack. Before the government can cover it up, McKenna mails some of the Predator’s armour and tech home — unknowingly putting it in the hands of his young son, Rory (Jacob Tremblay), a boy on the autism spectrum whose intelligence allows him to decipher the alien technology.

Meanwhile, evolutionary biologist Dr. Casey Bracket (Olivia Munn) is recruited by the government to study the Predator after it’s captured. But things spiral out of control when the alien breaks free, revealing that it’s being hunted by a new kind of Predator — a towering, genetically enhanced “Super Predator” that’s come to Earth with a deadly agenda.

McKenna teams up with a ragtag squad of ex-soldiers — a group of misfits nicknamed “The Loonies” — to protect his son and stop the ultimate Predator showdown. What follows is a fast-paced, chaotic mix of action, blood, and one-liners as the humans try to survive the escalating intergalactic conflict.

The Predator Review - 6/10 Rating

We’re giving The Predator (2018) a 6/10. It’s not the best in the franchise, but it’s far from the worst. The film had massive potential — with Shane Black (who appeared in the 1987 original) returning as writer/director — and it delivers some solid entertainment value, even if the tone and pacing are all over the place.

What we did enjoy was the cast dynamic. Boyd Holbrook leads with confidence, Olivia Munn brings intensity, and the supporting team (including Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, and Thomas Jane) add personality and humour that make the “Loonies” squad genuinely fun to watch. Their chemistry gives the film a Guardians of the Galaxy energy — just with more gore and profanity.

The action sequences are slick, the Predator designs look incredible, and the film’s upgraded Super Predator is a visual beast. However, the script’s uneven tone and overuse of comedy often undercut the tension that made the original Predator films so terrifying. Instead of the slow-burn suspense of a hunter stalking its prey, this one leans more toward chaotic blockbuster energy — fun, but not particularly scary.

The ending hints at franchise expansion — introducing a new piece of tech called the “Predator Killer” — but it left fans divided on whether the story justified another sequel.

Still, The Predator delivers enough action, nostalgia, and creature design to satisfy casual viewers and long-time fans looking for mindless sci-fi fun. It’s a decent watch with popcorn in hand — just don’t expect it to recapture the 1987 magic.

The Predator (2018) tried to evolve the franchise but got lost between tones — part horror, part comedy, part superhero flick. It’s a movie that entertains but doesn’t quite hit the deadly precision of its predecessors.

That said, it’s still worth a watch for the visuals, brutal kills, and Predator lore — plus, it’s always great to hear that chilling Predator growl echoing through the trees again.

Our Verdict: 6/10 – A fun, flawed return for the galaxy’s deadliest hunter.
