6/10 Rating
Set in 1994, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts expands the Transformers cinematic universe beyond Autobots and Decepticons, introducing a new faction of shape-shifting robots: the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons. When ancient enemies threaten to destroy Earth, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee must form an uneasy alliance with Optimus Primal and his Maximals — beastly Transformers from another world.
Together with human allies Noah and Elena, the heroes race against time to stop Unicron, a planet-devouring force of chaos, and his herald Scourge, leader of the Terrorcons. With global-scale stakes and deep lore pulled from Beast Wars, this chapter aims to blend nostalgic elements with fresh action, introducing a new generation to the Transformers mythos.
We rated Rise of the Beasts a 6/10 — a solid but uneven entry in the franchise. While the introduction of the Maximals and the shift toward 90s nostalgia brought some freshness, the film sometimes struggles under the weight of its own mythology.
Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback deliver likable, grounded performances, and the updated designs for the Autobots and Maximals are visually striking. However, the plot can feel overly familiar, and some emotional beats don’t land as strongly as intended.
The action is entertaining, and longtime fans will appreciate the Beast Wars references, but compared to past highs (Bumblebee), it doesn’t quite reach the same emotional or narrative depth. That said, the post-credits scene teases a GI Joe crossover, promising a bold future for the franchise.
