Directed by Mark Steven Johnson, Daredevil brought Marvel’s Man Without Fear to the big screen for the first time. Starring Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock, the film follows the tragic origin of Daredevil. As a young boy in Hell’s Kitchen, Matt is blinded by radioactive chemicals while saving a man’s life. Though he loses his sight, his other senses become heightened to superhuman levels, giving him radar-like perception of the world around him.
By day, Matt is a lawyer seeking justice in the courtroom. By night, he is Daredevil, protecting the streets of New York from crime and corruption. The film also introduces Elektra Natchios (Jennifer Garner), Matt’s love interest, and features powerful performances from Michael Clarke Duncan as the crime lord Kingpin and Colin Farrell as the psychotic assassin Bullseye.
Blending superhero action with gritty noir and romance, Daredevil aimed to show the darker side of Marvel’s heroes long before the MCU.
We’re rating Daredevil a solid 7/10.
Ben Affleck’s take on Matt Murdock worked surprisingly well. He captured the tortured soul of a man living between justice and vengeance, and his physical presence gave weight to Daredevil’s acrobatics and street-fighting style. The film’s opening scenes of his childhood accident set the stage perfectly, and the way his heightened senses were visualised was one of the highlights of the movie.
One of the most memorable moments is, of course, the kiss in the rain between Matt and Elektra — a scene that cleverly shows how Matt “sees” her through the sound of raindrops. It’s both romantic and a unique way of portraying Daredevil’s abilities.
The villains added to the fun, with Colin Farrell’s Bullseye being wonderfully unhinged, and Michael Clarke Duncan’s Kingpin commanding respect every time he was on screen. While the pacing sometimes felt uneven and the CGI hasn’t aged perfectly, the film still has charm and grit that make it stand out as an early Marvel adaptation.
Overall, Daredevil (2003) is an underrated gem. It’s darker than most superhero films of its time, with a strong emotional core and some unforgettable scenes.
