Alita: Battle Angel is the 2019 cyberpunk action film based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga series Gunnm, also known internationally as Battle Angel Alita. Set in the futuristic Iron City, the film follows Alita, a cyborg discovered in a scrapyard by scientist Dr. Dyson Ido. After being rebuilt, Alita begins uncovering fragments of her forgotten past while navigating a violent world filled with bounty hunters, corrupt powers and deadly combat sports. Produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez, the film blends manga-inspired visuals, emotional storytelling and large-scale sci-fi action into a visually ambitious adaptation.
We have rated Alita: Battle Angel 8 out of 10, because it is one of the strongest live-action manga adaptations Hollywood has produced in years. Rosa Salazar gives Alita real emotional warmth beneath the CGI-heavy visuals, helping the character feel human despite the futuristic setting. The world-building is excellent, with Iron City feeling busy, dangerous and full of hidden stories. The action sequences are slick and energetic, especially during the Motorball scenes, while the emotional core gives the movie more heart than many expected. It deserved more attention on release and has since built a passionate cult following among sci-fi and manga fans.
