Overview

Wanted (2008) Storyline

From an ordinary office worker to a deadly assassin, Wanted thrusts viewers into a hidden world where fate and skill collide. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is a disillusioned young man stuck in a mundane life — until he’s recruited by the mysterious Fox (Angelina Jolie) to join the Fraternity, a secret society of elite assassins.

Guided by his enigmatic mentor Sloan (Morgan Freeman), Wesley learns to harness superhuman reflexes, master impossible shots, and follow a creed where “the bullet always finds its target.” But as Wesley uncovers secrets about the Fraternity’s true nature, he must decide whether to embrace his dark destiny or fight back.

Wanted blends jaw-dropping action sequences with a gritty, comic-book-inspired story of transformation, vengeance, and free will.

Wanted (2008) Review 7/10

7

We have rated this 7 out of 10. Wanted delivers high-octane thrills and a visually inventive take on the assassin genre that comic fans will appreciate. James McAvoy shines as the relatable underdog turned lethal force, while Angelina Jolie dominates the screen with charisma and physicality.

The film’s standout features are its stylized action sequences — especially the iconic bullet-curving shots and slow-motion combat scenes — which elevate it beyond your typical shoot-’em-up. Director Timur Bekmambetov’s kinetic style brings a unique energy and flair that keeps you hooked.

However, the story is sometimes thin and predictable, and the film glosses over deeper character development in favour of flashy set pieces. Still, Wanted is an entertaining ride for anyone who loves action-packed, comic-book-inspired cinema with a darker edge.

Did You Know?

  • Based on a Graphic Novel: Wanted is adapted from the comic book series by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, though the film takes liberties with the story and tone.
  • James McAvoy’s Physical Transformation: McAvoy trained extensively in martial arts and stunt work to perform many of his own action scenes.
  • Bullet Bending: The signature bullet-curving effect was inspired by the comics and took months of visual effects work to perfect.
  • Angelina Jolie’s Influence: Jolie was involved in shaping her character’s look and fight style, adding a deadly elegance to Fox.
  • Morgan Freeman’s Role: Freeman brought gravitas to the film as Sloan, grounding the otherwise frenetic pace with his calm mentor presence.
  • Filming Locations: The movie was shot primarily in the Czech Republic, giving it a distinctive European feel that enhances the mysterious assassin world.
  • Deleted Scenes: Some darker and more violent scenes were cut to keep the movie’s rating at PG-13.
  • Sequel Talk: Despite fan interest and a strong cult following, no official sequel has yet been made, though Mark Millar has expressed interest in continuing the story.
  • Famous Car Chase: The film features a high-energy car chase through city streets that was choreographed with a blend of practical effects and CGI.
  • Mark Millar Cameo: The original comic creator makes a brief cameo in the film as a man in a bar.
