Back in 2016, after the unexpected success of Suicide Squad, DC fans were buzzing about a spin-off centered on the most dangerous—and iconic—women of Gotham: Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman. Titled Gotham City Sirens, the film was set to reunite some of DC’s most infamous female antiheroes in one explosive team-up. David Ayer (director of Suicide Squad) was originally attached, and Margot Robbie was expected to reprise her now-iconic role as Harley Quinn.

But in classic DC fashion, production delays, studio shake-ups, and changing visions caused the project to go quiet… and for years, fans have asked the same question: Is Gotham City Sirens still happening?

The Delays and What Changed
Originally announced in late 2016, Gotham City Sirens was supposed to fast-track development after Suicide Squad became a box office hit despite mixed reviews. Margot Robbie, fresh off her breakout performance as Harley, was a key driving force behind the film and was even producing it through her company LuckyChap.

However, with the release of Birds of Prey in 2020—another female-led Gotham story featuring Harley—it seemed DC had shifted focus away from Sirens. The mixed commercial reception of Birds of Prey, combined with internal restructuring at Warner Bros. and the merger with Discovery, threw much of the previous DC slate into question.

Fast-forward to today, and under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new leadership at DC Studios, many projects have been rebooted or scrapped altogether. Gunn has confirmed a complete overhaul of the DC Universe, starting with his Superman film in 2025. This raises the biggest question: Will Gotham City Sirens be rebooted too—or revived with a new cast and creative team?

Will Margot Robbie Return?
While James Gunn has confirmed that most of the DCEU actors will be recast, there is one exception fans are hoping for: Margot Robbie.

Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn has been universally praised, from Suicide Squad to Birds of Prey and even The Suicide Squad (2021), which Gunn himself directed. The chemistry between Gunn and Robbie behind the scenes, along with her popularity in the role, has sparked hope that she might survive the DCU reset.

That said, Gunn has yet to officially confirm her involvement in the new universe. It’s possible Harley Quinn will be reintroduced at a later stage—perhaps in The Batman universe or a Sirens project further down the line.

Who Could Play the Sirens?
If Gotham City Sirens is revived under James Gunn’s vision, casting will be key. While it’s still speculative, here are some actresses fans would love to see step into the roles if the characters are recast:

Poison Ivy
Jodie Comer (Killing Eve): Known for her intensity and charm—perfect for Ivy’s seductive danger.

Anya Taylor-Joy: Quirky, mysterious, and expressive. A fan-favorite choice for Ivy in a stylized DCU.

Catwoman
Eiza González: Suave, sleek, and action-ready. She’s been fan-cast for Selina Kyle for years.

Zoë Kravitz already plays Catwoman in The Batman universe, but it’s unclear if she’ll cross into Gunn’s DCU.

Harley Quinn
If Margot Robbie isn’t brought back, contenders could include:

Samara Weaving (Ready or Not): Often compared to Robbie and has the same wild energy.

Florence Pugh: Charismatic and fierce, she could easily flip from charming to chaotic.

Is There Hope for Gotham City Sirens?
Despite the silence, Gotham City Sirens is a concept too strong to stay buried forever. Female-led comic book movies are more popular than ever, and with characters as rich as Harley, Ivy, and Catwoman, there’s massive storytelling potential—whether it’s a big-screen team-up or a prestige streaming series on Max.

James Gunn is known for giving lesser-known characters new life (Guardians of the Galaxy, Peacemaker), so if Sirens gets reimagined under his guidance, it could be something special.

Final Thoughts
So, is Gotham City Sirens still happening? Officially—no. But in the ever-evolving world of DC, that could change any day. Whether it’s a direct continuation, a reboot, or a new concept entirely, fans are more than ready to see Gotham’s most dangerous women take center stage. Until then, we’ll be watching, hoping, and casting our dream trio.
