With James Gunn now steering the creative future of DC Studios, the cinematic universe is undergoing a major overhaul. From Superman to Swamp Thing, Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran are reshaping the mythos with a bold new vision. But one question fans keep asking is:

Should James Gunn write a Batman and Robin film?

Why Batman & Robin Deserve Another Shot

The Batman and Robin duo is legendary—but it’s also been sorely neglected on screen. Since Christopher Nolan’s trilogy omitted Robin entirely and the 1997 Batman & Robin movie bombed critically, the Boy Wonder has been left in the shadows.
But under Gunn’s direction, this could finally change.

Gunn has proven his ability to handle complex, ensemble-driven character stories (Guardians of the Galaxy, Peacemaker).

He isn’t afraid to take risks with tone, injecting heart into bizarre or previously failed concepts.

A Batman and Robin film could balance legacy, mentorship, humor, and tragedy—all themes Gunn excels at.

Some fans have even called for a standalone Robin origin story—focusing on Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, or even Damian Wayne—as a bold new direction for the Bat-family.

Who Could Play Robin?

If James Gunn does choose to bring Robin into his DCU, here are 7 strong contenders who could wear the domino mask:

1. David Mazouz

Role: Young Bruce Wayne in Gotham (FOX)

Why He Works: Mazouz already has Bat-cred and knows how to handle emotionally heavy material. If he were to flip from Bruce to a mature Dick Grayson, it’d be a poetic full-circle casting.

Ideal for: A serious, detective-style Robin or Nightwing spinoff.

2. Asher Angel

Role: Billy Batson in Shazam! (DC Films)

Why He Works: Angel already knows the DC universe and has the right mix of charm and seriousness. He’s proven he can handle action, humor, and heart—a solid fit for Dick or even Tim Drake.

Note: Would need recasting out of Shazam continuity if Robin is part of the new DCU.

3. Jaeden Martell

Roles: It, Knives Out, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone

Why He Works: Martell brings depth and subtle intensity. His screen presence leans cerebral—making him an ideal pick for a detective-style Tim Drake or a darker, Jason Todd arc.

4. Levi Miller

Roles: Pan, Better Watch Out, Streamline

Why He Works: Miller can shift from innocent to dangerous quickly—perfect for a version of Robin who struggles with anger or vengeance, such as Jason Todd.

5. Louis Partridge

Roles: Viscount Tewkesbury in Enola Holmes

Why He Works: Partridge has a timeless, Victorian energy that could work beautifully for a classically noble Dick Grayson. His British charm could also give Robin a unique tonal contrast to a gruffer Batman.

6. Lucas Jade Zumann

Roles: 20th Century Women, Anne with an E

Why He Works: One of the more dramatic actors on this list, Zumann could bring emotional intelligence to the role, especially if Robin is written with grief or legacy in mind.

7. Noah Schnapp

Role: Will Byers in Stranger Things

Why He Works: Schnapp’s ability to portray vulnerability, inner turmoil, and growth could make him an excellent Damian Wayne—a Robin raised by assassins but searching for identity.

Final Thoughts

James Gunn has proven he can reinvent characters that studios previously struggled with. A Batman and Robin film—done right—could reintroduce the heart and humanity of the Bat-family to a generation raised on gritty reboots.

A standalone Robin film could also pave the way for a Teen Titans or Nightwing spinoff, expanding the DC Universe beyond the cape and cowl.
