Exploring Marvel’s Cosmic Future

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wrapped up many of the series’ long-running arcs — from Rocket’s emotional backstory to the fate of the original team. But even as it served as a goodbye of sorts, it also opened the door to new beginnings. So the big question remains: Will there be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4?

Let’s break down what’s been said, how James Gunn’s move to DC impacts the franchise, and what the future could look like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

What Have Marvel and James Gunn Said?
So far, Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4. However, the ending of Vol. 3 made it clear that the story isn’t quite finished.

Director James Gunn has emphasized that Vol. 3 was the end of his version of the Guardians. In interviews, he’s said he’s told the story he wanted to tell — and with Rocket now leading a new team, and Peter Quill returning to Earth, he felt it was the right moment to step away.

Still, Marvel left us with a clear post-credits message:

“The Legendary Star-Lord will return.”

That alone hints that while Gunn may be done, Marvel isn’t quite finished with these characters.

James Gunn’s Move to DC: What It Means
James Gunn has officially taken on the role of co-CEO of DC Studios, where he’s busy rebooting the DC Universe alongside Peter Safran. Projects like Superman (2025) and The Brave and the Bold are already in motion.

This essentially means Gunn is out of the Marvel game — at least for the foreseeable future. Marvel continuing the Guardians franchise without Gunn is possible, but it would likely take on a different tone, as his signature mix of humor, music, and heartfelt storytelling defined the trilogy.

Two Likely Directions for a Guardians 4
Even without an official announcement, there are two logical directions for a future film or Disney+ series:

1. The New Guardians Team

In the final scenes of Vol. 3, we see a new lineup led by Rocket, with members including:

  • Adam Warlock
  • Kraglin
  • Cosmo the Spacedog
  • Groot (in a new, hulking form)
  • Phyla (a new young recruit)

This could be the foundation for Guardians of the Galaxy 4, focusing on fresh cosmic adventures and expanding the Marvel cosmic lore — especially as it ties into Phase 6 events like Avengers: Secret Wars.

2. Peter Quill’s Earthbound Story
Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, returns to Earth in Vol. 3’s closing scenes, hinting at a new chapter for the character. Marvel could explore a solo project — potentially titled The Legendary Star-Lord — showing Peter adjusting to Earth life and reconnecting with his past.

Given his leadership skills and cosmic experience, Quill could also play a major role in upcoming crossover events or even form alliances with Earth-based heroes.

Where Would a Sequel Fit in the MCU?
If Guardians 4 or any spin-off happens, it would likely take place after the events of Vol. 3 and within the cosmic timeline of Phase 6. With Fantastic Four, Nova, and more cosmic entities on the horizon, the Guardians (in any form) remain central to Marvel’s space-faring stories.

They could also play a critical role in the Kang Dynasty/Secret Wars arc — especially given their experience with multiversal threats.

Final Thoughts: Is Guardians of the Galaxy 4 Happening?

While there’s no official Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 on the schedule yet, the ending of Vol. 3 makes it clear that Marvel has plans. Whether it’s Rocket’s new team or a solo journey for Star-Lord, this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the Guardians.
The franchise may be evolving, but in the MCU — no goodbye is ever final.
