The King’s Man is the 2021 prequel to the Kingsman franchise, exploring the fictional origins of the independent spy organisation during the First World War era. The film follows the Duke of Oxford and his son Conrad as they become caught in a conspiracy involving tyrants, spies and shadowy figures manipulating world events. Rather than continuing Eggsy’s modern story, the prequel shifts the series into a period action-adventure with historical villains, secret networks and early Kingsman ideals. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, the film attempts to give the comic-based franchise a grander origin myth while keeping flashes of stylised violence and spy intrigue.
We have rated The King’s Man 6 out of 10, because it is an interesting but uneven prequel that works better as a stylish war-era adventure than as a full-blooded Kingsman movie. Ralph Fiennes gives the film class and emotional weight, and the period setting allows for some handsome visuals and unusual action scenes. The problem is that the tone jumps around wildly, moving from sincere wartime drama to outrageous comic-book villainy without always blending smoothly. There are strong moments, especially when the film leans into the formation of the agency, but it lacks the electric freshness of The Secret Service. Still, for fans building the full Kingsman timeline, it is a useful origin chapter with enough ambition to make it worth including.
