The internet is buzzing with rumours that Hayley Atwell and Chris Evans have begun filming for Marvel Studios’ upcoming event film, Avengers: Doomsday. While Marvel has yet to confirm anything officially, set leaks and insider whispers are pointing to both stars reprising their iconic roles as Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers — a development that could have major implications for the multiverse saga.

Steve Rogers: From Super-Soldier to Old Man

Chris Evans first donned the stars and stripes in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), instantly becoming one of the MCU’s cornerstone heroes. Over the years, his arc spanned self-sacrifice in The Avengers, leadership in Civil War, and emotional closure in Avengers: Endgame, where he returned the Infinity Stones and ultimately lived out a full life with Peggy Carter.

When audiences last saw Steve in the main MCU timeline, he was an elderly man passing his shield to Sam Wilson. Evans himself has often stated he was done with the role, but Marvel fans know better: in a multiverse, no door is ever permanently closed.

Peggy Carter: The First Lady of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter is one of the MCU’s most beloved characters. First appearing in The First Avenger, Peggy proved to be more than just a love interest — she was a founding figure of S.H.I.E.L.D., a fighter, and a symbol of resilience.

Atwell reprised the role in the short-lived Agent Carter series, voiced Peggy in What If…? (as Captain Carter), and made a live-action return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a shield-wielding Captain Britain-inspired variant. While Peggy passed away in the main timeline (Civil War), her variants across the multiverse prove she still has a place in Marvel’s future.

How Could They Return in Avengers: Doomsday?

  • The multiverse storyline gives Marvel creative freedom to bring back characters we thought were gone. If these rumours are true, Atwell and Evans could appear in several exciting ways:
  • Captain Carter’s Return: Following her What If…? and Doctor Strange appearances, Atwell could reprise her role as a multiversal Captain Carter, fighting alongside the Avengers in the battle against Doctor Doom.
  • A Younger Steve Rogers Variant: Evans could play an alternate-timeline Steve, one who never aged or perhaps took a darker path. With Secret Wars looming, expect multiple variants of beloved heroes.
  • Emotional Reunion: Marvel may give fans a bittersweet reunion between Steve and Peggy, even if only briefly, providing closure or inspiration for the new Avengers lineup.
  • Flashbacks or Multiversal Collisions: Scenes involving timelines colliding could bring back Steve and Peggy at their prime, caught up in Doom’s reality-warping schemes.

Why It Matters

Bringing back Evans and Atwell isn’t just fan service — it’s about emotional weight. Steve and Peggy’s story is one of the MCU’s most heartfelt arcs. If Doomsday is about ultimate stakes, then having characters who embody love, sacrifice, and heroism could be the emotional backbone of the film.

Doctor Doom isn’t just a physical threat; he’s a manipulator of reality and time. If anyone could tug at Steve’s heart — or tempt him with what could have been — it’s Doom. Likewise, Peggy’s presence as either Captain Carter or a multiverse anchor could remind audiences why the Avengers fight in the first place.

If these reports prove true, Avengers: Doomsday will not only be Marvel’s most ambitious crossover yet — it’ll also be one of its most emotional. Seeing Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell side by side again, whether as lovers separated by time or as multiversal heroes fighting together, would be a full-circle moment for fans who have followed the MCU since Phase One.

Until Marvel confirms it, we’ll keep this filed under “rumour”… but it’s one we’re very excited about.
